FAMILY LEADERSHIP
Family leadership emerges when community members and parents gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in meaningful leadership roles that help shape the future of families, schools and communities.
WHAT IS A FAMILY LEADERSHIP TRAINING INSTITUTE (FLTI)?
Colorado has identified a curriculum that offers empowerment and civics skills to support parents/families
in making desired changes for children. The curriculum, Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) from the
State of Connecticut is an evidenced based curriculum with proven positive outcomes for children, families, and the community. This 20-week curriculum is designed to bolster family involvement and leadership skills while promoting the life long health, safety and learning of children. The cornerstones of the program are respect, validation and a belief that when the tools of democracy are understood, the public will become active participants in communities.
PARTICIPANTS ARE OFFERED LEADERSHIP TRAINING THAT INCLUDES:
A retreat to develop group communication
10 weeks of classes on self and perception of leadership
A community project based upon the student’s personal passions
LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF FLTI
Help parents become the leaders they would like to be for children and families
Expand the capacity of parents as change agents for children and families
Develop communities of parents within regions of the state that
will support one another in skills development and successful
parent action for children
Facilitate systems change for parental involvement with increased
utilization of parents in policy and process decisions
Increase parent-child interactions and improve child outcomes
through parent involvement
